Mohamed Mounir was born on 25 January 1934, in Cairo. His father was a railway worker. He spent his childhood in the neighbourhood of El-Abbasiya, where he attended primary school. Mohamed Mounir's first steps into the world of music were taken at the age of 12 when he took part in a children's contest at Radio Cairo, singing one of Umm Kulthum's famous songs. However, it was not until he joined the Military School of Music where he began to study music seriously after graduating from high school. At first, Mohamed Mounir had no interest in art and wanted to become an electrical engineer. He joined the Military School of Music and studied music there. When he graduated from high school, he was sent with a military mission to France, where he stayed for two years. It was there that Mounir studied music seriously and learned French.
